So I was working on an ad and this thought crossed my mind. Weddings are a celebration of uniting two people, two personalities, two perceptions of life. And so planning a wedding isn't just about the formalities (or the one-upping the last wedding you attended) but also about personalization -- expressing who you are as a Bride, a Groom and more importantly, as a couple.

Just something to think about when you dive into your wedding plans. What type of Bride and Groom are you? And how will you express that in your wedding?

SWEETEN THE DEAL:
UNIQUE DESSERT
OPTIONS FOR ANY EVENT

So you're at an event -- be it a wedding, an anniversary, fundraising gala, whatever -- and you've just finished the fourth (or fifth, or sixth) course. It was delicious and now you're stuffed. And yet strangely you're still looking forward to that last course of decadence -- dessert. You're excited. You're curious. And when the waiter plops down a sorbet in front of you...you're deflated.

Sound familiar?

I've never understood why so many people put emphasis on all the prime courses of their menu, ensuring that the first three or more courses "wow" their guests' taste buds, only to fall flat when it comes to the dessert. Perhaps it's a cost factor in which anything customized costs a pretty penny. Or perhaps hosts assume that by the time dessert rolls around, their guests will be so stuffed that no one will notice when that generic tartufo is dropped in front of them. What many hosts don't understand is that dessert -- being the last course of the meal -- is what will linger on their guests' tongues. And if that's the case...Where's that lasting impression?

Here are just a few alternatives to the usual ice cream, tartfufo, sorbet, cake and every other dessert that leaves us whining "again?"

COFFEE, TEA OR...WINE?

Yes many enjoy that cup of java or tea with their sweet endings, but why not shake things up for your guests. Before the coffee and tea cart rolls around, why not pair a delectable dessert with a sweet, full-bodied ice wine? For eye candy, place the dessert on a long rectangular plate alongside a shot glass of ice wine. The combination is to die for on the palate and for some, it will be a completely unique experience.

This Planner's fave? Naked Grape Vidal Ice Wine! With a hint of honey and apricot aromas, this full bodied baby is as sweet as it sounds.

EUROPEAN FLAIR!

The Europeans know how to eat well and when it comes to after-dinner fare they have it down! Rather than go with the usual blah blah blah for dessert, why not borrow from the French or Italians and offer a clever combo that is sure to not disappoint. A variety of grapes and cheese served on a platter for the table to share is actually one of the most harmonious pairings for apres dinner. The crisp, sweet taste of the grapes compliment the complex flavours of the variety of cheese. Some of our fave combinations? Black Cornith grapes with Pecorino and Grana Pedano cheese. Perlett grapes with Brie. And Concord grapes with Goat cheese. Light, with a sweet-and-savory influence, grape and cheese platters are an unusual ending to any four-course meal.

YOU DID WHAT WITH WHAT???

This Planner stumbled across this site and happily discovered two incredibly unique dessert options that just make your taste buds swoon. Want to take that boring old dessert and make it fresh, funky and new (not to mention delish)? How's a Tomato Sorbet served with a mozzarella shortbread cookie or Wasabi cheesecake (in the shape of ice cream) served with ginger ice cream (in the shape of cheesecake)!

This Planner is a big fan of Poached Wine Pears. The tartness of the wine coupled with the sweetness of the pear makes for a delicious and belly-warming experience. Not to mention the deep colour of the wine basks the pear in elegance.

Or how about this Mixed Berry Soup with Floating Island Meringue by Food in Focus editor Camilla Van Beuningen? The subtle sweetness of the berry soup with the fluffy texture of the meringue makes for an interesting and delicious pairing.

Opting for something a little different as your last course will make an already creative and tantalizing meal cross the line into absolutely imaginative and incredible. If you want your guests to leave their tables with a lasting impression of their meal, switching up the blase for the unusual will hit their palate in all the right places and keep their tongues wagging long after your event is over.

YOUR WEDDING TO-NOT-DO LIST

So you're wedding is fast approaching or maybe you just got engaged and are starting the planning process. Whether you're already knee-deep in planning or just starting out, there's no doubt that you have an ever-growing To Do List in front of you.

Well, This Planner thought she'd take a different approach. So curl up with a blanket and a steaming cup of coffee and revel in the one list that won't cause even an ounce of stress:

DO NOT TRY TO PLEASE EVERYONE

This is a toughie, we know. Everyone from your Mother to your Maid-of-Honour has an opinion about what's proper, what should be included (or excluded), who should sit next to whom and how your wedding should be. With all the outside influences and opinions, couples can go downright batty trying to please everyone forgetting one small important detail: It's YOUR WEDDING. This is your day to celebrate your love in your way no matter how non-traditional or off-the-beaten-path. And if someone doesn't like how you're choosing to celebrate your unity, trust me, they'll get over it eventually.

So how do you plan your wedding your way without insulting those you care about most? There are a few key words to spout off whenever an opinion gets thrown at you. Write this down: "I'll take that into consideration". And do consider it. Then either accept it or toss it. If your case involves parents who contribute financially to your wedding day and feel that this entitles them to make decisions about the wedding, know that offering to contribute to the wedding should be because they truly want to help you with a very special day, not take control.

That said, if they offer to contribute to the wedding, express your gratitude and politely (and immediately!) lay down the ground rules. If the parental units still expect to have control over your wedding either take the contribution and offer to -- write this down: "Compromise" (and do just that) or politely decline the offer and plan a wedding that's within your financial means but that reflects you.

Now go focus on the two people you absolutely must please: yourselves.

DO NOT PLAN OUTSIDE OF YOUR MEANS

It's very easy to get caught up in the beautiful images portrayed in magazines and in blogs. But if those images don't work within your budget --here's that word again -- compromise. You may have to sacrifice one thing in order to have another or you may have to switch up that expensive flower with a more cost efficient flower to get the look you want.

When starting out with your planning, set out which elements of the wedding are of the top priority and which aren't. This will help you decide where to splurge and where to cut back. At the same time, be realistic of what things cost. Do your research and allocate your budget accordingly. (Hint: your food and beverage costs should always be top priority!)

Being on a budget is one thing. Expecting wedding professionals to negotiate their fees or pricing just because you're on a budget is another (not to mention quite disrespectful). This is their career and just like you wouldn't expect your lawyer to negotiate his fees, you shouldn't expect that of a wedding professional. Also keep in mind that old adage "you get what you pay for". If a wedding professional's fees are dramatically lower than his or her competitors, consider that a red flag and make sure you question the reason for such a low fee.

DO NOT TRY TO DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF

Planning a wedding is extremely time consuming. And if you're having trouble finding the time to get everything done, consider asking for or hiring help. Have favours that need tagging? Consider having your wedding party over for a pizza-and-tagging party. Need help pulling together your vision, keeping on track with planning and budget or need someone to ensure your day executes perfectly? Hire a wedding planner.

There's a reason there are so many wedding professionals at your disposal. You don't want to leave those invaluable plans to chance. Sure enlisting family members to play "wedding vendor" might save money but why would you want them to miss out on all the fun and special moments? They are still your guests after all. Not to mention that wedding professionals -- from DJs to photographers to wedding planners -- are highly skilled at what they do and are equipped with the knowledge and experience to handle any given situation that might arise.

Utilize wedding professionals as much as possible. There's a reason they exist.

DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO FOLLOW "THE RULES"

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When it comes to weddings there are very few "rules". Etiquette and cultural or religious considerations are among them. And that is based out of respect for your guests and yourselves.

Other than that, your wedding is yours to plan however you see fit. If you want elephants to fly in carrying the rings that's your choice. Weddings are a personal celebration so personalizing your wedding to reflect you as a couple is key.

Most elements of weddings are based on tradition or trend. The white wedding gown? A trend started by Queen Victoria. The bouquet and garter toss? Tradition.

No one can tell you how your wedding "should" be. As long as your guests are comfortable, well fed, respected and entertained, you've done your job.

DO NOT FEEL EVERYTHING HAS TO BE THE SHINY-AND-NEW

Everyone loves to have brand new things: brand new wedding gown, brand new suit, brand new cake knife and server, etc, etc, etc. But if "brand new" doesn't fit into your budget, consider the not-so-new route. Wedding gowns can be rented, purchased second hand or your mother's gown can be refurbished to fit your style. If you can't afford a custom made suit -- why not wear your own? Can't afford those brand new white wedding stilettos? Use those hot pink stilettos in your closet for a punch of colour. Sometimes hand-me-downs or your everyday items can be a cost-effective and equally sentimental element to your wedding.

DO NOT FORGET THE MEANING BEHIND YOUR WEDDING

With all the design aspects to a wedding, all the "how to make a rocking party" details and consideration of family or other obligations, it's very easy to forget the reason you're having a wedding in the first place. Everyone wants a beautiful, fun wedding, but don't forget the most important aspect to your wedding day: you're marrying the love of your life. That's truly all that should matter over and above everything else.

Don't wait until the wedding day to revel in this. Schedule one night every month in the midst of all that planning (and in some cases, stress) to go out with your Bride or Groom to-be and go do something romantic. Whether it's a romantic dinner at your favourite restaurant, a movie or a romantic walk in the park, be sure that the subject of your wedding plans do not come up in conversation. Enjoy your evening or day and talk about your future together, not about the celebration that will make that official.

FOR BRIDES: DO NOT FORGET ABOUT YOUR GROOM

There are times that a wedding can seem like it's all about the Bride. And it's easy to see how that thought pops up from time to time. The Bride is the one with "the binder", is researching centerpieces, cakes and wedding gowns. And some Brides have been dreaming of her wedding day since she was a little girl. But Brides need to remember that the wedding day is not just about the Bride. The Groom isn't just showing up to get married. The wedding day is as much his day as it is the Bride's. That having been said, Brides should delegate responsibilities to the Groom to keep him in the loop and share in the planning process. Ask the Groom what his vision for the day is and work together to ensure both visions are met.

FOR GROOMS: DO NOT TAKE THE BACKSEAT

In addition to the above, Grooms need to let go of the "Bride's Day" or "Wedding planning is a girl thing" mentality. Grooms need to take an active role in the planning process. This is not just to ensure that the wedding reflects their personality as well as the Bride, but also to alleviate stress from the Bride by taking on some of the responsibilities. Time and time again, I've seen Brides succumb to being overwhelmed by all the planning details because the Groom is sitting back and letting her take control. Grooms should offer to take on some of the To-Do List and be open about his wishes or opinions. They should attend all meetings with all professionals, be it the florist, the cake designer or the wedding planner -- not only those meetings that interest them like the DJ or transportation. You never know what might spark your interest or it might surprise you that you actually have an opinion about something that you thought you wouldn't.

DO NOT STRESS ABOUT THE LITTLE THINGS

Is rain in the forecast for your wedding day? Are you feeling bloated in your wedding gown? Is your Mother-in-Law having a meltdown because your Mother has the same coloured gown for the wedding day? Stop stressing! There will always be little hiccups to planning any celebration. The key is to roll with them. I have always said to my clients who are stressing about possible rain, "It's rain, not acid. It's not like it's going to melt away your wedding day". Stressing about the little things that can't be helped will only ruin what should be an exciting time in your life, whether it's the planning process or the wedding day itself.

But there are two important things to have on hand to help you not worry about those pesky little things. One is to always have a "Plan B" in place. For example, if there's the possibility of rain, purchase enough umbrellas for your wedding party, or for outdoor weddings ensure that there is an indoor option that you can move the wedding into. The other important thing is to have on hand if you're at risk for stressing is a wedding planner, even if it is merely to manage the wedding day. They'll subtly handle issues that may come up on the wedding day and ensure that the wedding is how you have envisioned it, allowing you to focus on celebrating and little else.

Little things are exactly that: little things. Don't let them put pressure on or ruin your wedding day. In fact, sometimes it's those little things that make your wedding day even more memorable.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT "YOU"

With so much focus put on the wedding day it's easy to forget about taking care of yourself. Whether you're the Bride or the Groom, when planning starts to take over your life, schedule some "You" time. How do you know if planning has taken over your sanity? Ask yourself these questions:

Are you stressed?
Are you tired all the time?
Has planning your wedding become somewhat un-enjoyable?
Are you up until all hours planning your wedding?
Is your To-Do List infiltrating your dreams at night?
Can't remember when you last had a girls' or boys' night out during which you didn't talk about the wedding?

If you've answered "yes" to at least three of the above questions you may be overdue for some "You" time. Your To-Do List will still be there in the morning. Go out with your friends (and don't talk about the wedding even if your friends bring it up!), get pampered at a spa, take a weekend trip away with your spouse-to-be or just spend an evening watching reruns of Friends. Scheduling some time away from "wedding planner mode" is a must-do and when you get back to planning the details you'll find yourself more clear-headed and more importantly, happier.

A YEAR IN REVIEW...

Another year of planning out-of-the-box weddings and events is almost behind us and a brand spankin' new year that's filled with super-awesome clientele and endless possibilities is just around the corner! This Planner at Et Lofte Events has been so very lucky to have spent 2011 not only planning unique weddings and events for some truly open-minded and creative clients but also connecting with fellow wedding and event professionals who are always up to the challenge of surpassing my "unique" expectations! That said, as we approach 2012 at lightening speed I thought I'd take a moment to sit back and reflect on just a few of Et Lofte Events' most memorable moments and concepts of 2011:

the wedding guestbook made up entirely of speeding tickets and the shooting-target seating chart in honour of the Groom's profession

that moment of serenity I felt when I noticed a deer quietly watching me set up an outdoor wedding

Menu Cubes: small boxes with each course printed on each side of the box and a truffle waiting inside as an extra surprise

granting our clients' wish of turning a bland, community banquet hall with an old-school outlook into a "unique venue"

the surprise Acapella Group performance at a client's wedding (the Groom's gift to his Bride)

To replace the boring kissing game at a client's wedding we chose to have the guests pay for a kiss (one dollar gets a peck on the cheek, five dollars gets "the dip", etc) with the proceeds going to charity in honour of the Groom's late father. At the reception, the Groom's mother took up a collection of Four Hundred Dollars from guests and said to the Newlyweds "This had better be a good kiss!"...And what a kiss it was!

Our "street-haute" design for a Creative Direction client's event (think graffiti projected walls and centerpieces utilizing bicycle wheels and blown-out umbrellas!) Can't wait to see pics!

The illusion that Bobby Motta pulled on me at a client's wedding in which he somehow managed to get my wedding band on a key chain ring, in a zipped wallet, in his back pocket...(still haven't figured out how you did that Dude.)

Each and every moment my clients' eyes lit up at an idea I had thought up for their event.

My goal for 2012? It's simple really. My goal is to continue to work with clients who aren't afraid to step out-of-the-box, defy trends, take risks and trust in my unique vision and planning skills. It is to continue to exceed my clients' expectations, to help my clients enjoy the planning process of their special event and to push my creativity past even the farthest of limits.

To my uber-fantastic clients of 2011 and beyond I sincerely wish to thank you for granting me such amazing opportunities to utilize my creativity and create one-of-a-kind weddings and events for you. It was an honour to share in your life celebration. I am so incredibly thankful each and every day of planning your occasions that I have been lucky enough to find my niche in the planning industry, no matter how unconventional the path may be and to have clients, like you, who encourage me to push the envelope with your open-mindedness. I wish each and every one of you all the best for a happy, love-filled and adventurous 2012.

To my assistants and Associate Planners with Et Lofte Events, I want to thank you for all your hard work and dedication in 2011. Thank you for all the giggles, the sweat, the encouragement and most of all, your friendship. A WINTER THEMED EVENT?
DO IT CHARLES DICKENS STYLE

If you're planning a winter themed event or wedding and the thought of glittery Christmas trees and "winter wonderland" themes make you want to gag, consider hitting the books...literally.

Nothing shouts "winter" or "Christmas" more than Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. And with just the right touches, your wintery event or wedding can be the stuff that Christmas carols are made of.

THE LOCATION

Host the event or wedding at a historical mansion (think Graydon Hall or Heintzman House here in Toronto).

THE ATTIRE

For weddings top hats, tails, ascots and canes are must-have's for the Groom and Brides can don a beautiful muff, cape or stole. Young Ring Bearers would look adorable in a pea coat and knickers. For general events, dress up waitstaff similarly or for a more fun, interactive element, invite guests to dress up as their favourite (or any) character from A Christmas Carol.

THE DECOR

A Christmas Carol lends itself to endless possibilities when it comes to decor as you can pull different elements from the era itself (like town square) to specific scenes from the movie (like Fezziwig's party, etc). Some of This Planner's ideas?
Candelabra or lanterns hanging from stands adorned with ivy and winter florals to line walkways and aisles
Old fashioned street lamp props decorated with ivy coupled with street signs
Set up food stations as classic store fronts. Label the stations as they'd be seen in town, like Bakery, etc.
Rectangle tables set up "commune" style and dressed in ivory and rich browns
Large lanterns set in the middle of tables and decorated with evergreen branches, fake holly and pine cones

THE DETAILS

Travel via horse and carriage or offer horse and carriage rides to guests
Turn a top hat upside down and use it to house mini scrolls upon which guests can write their holiday wishes for the host or Bride and Groom.
Tie mini scrolls of quotes from A Christmas Carol to table cards for guests to take
In lieu of table numbers, name tables after characters from the book (Scrooge, Cratchit, Fizziwig, Tiny Tim...well you get the idea)
As a takeaway for your guests, offer copies of A Christmas Carol, mini pies or even gingerbread men shaped like a ghost (to represent the three spirits). For a more traditional take on the era, give away bite-sized boxes of fruitcake

ENTERTAINMENT

Have carolers dressed in period clothing sing carols during the cocktail hour or, if a cocktail party, have them roam the room and sing to clusters of guests.
Have a dance instructor teach guests how to waltz on the dance floor
Have a photo backdrop with a wide variety of top hats, canes, gloves, large Victorian hats, etc. for guests to pose with and have their photo taken

FOOD

Go traditional with your edibles! Serve classic turkey with stuffing and cranberries and mashed potatoes family style at each guest table. And for weddings, display a traditional Bride AND Groom cake
Offer comfort food that will create that warm-and-fuzzy feeling for your guests. Think soups (like butternut squash, pumpkin or tomato) in shot glasses alongside finger sandwiches
Serve spiced wine and hot buttered rum during cocktails
Forgo the traditional late night munchies and offer hot chocolate and egg nog stations, a gingerbread house from which guests can pick and a station offering a variety of pies from classic apple to more obscure like Tourtierre (meat pie).

JACQUIE AND GEORGE:
SWEET SIMPLICITY

Jacquie and George's wedding day basked in the sun of one of the most beautiful days of July. The Torontonians tied the knot at Stone Gardens on the Lake,surrounded by a beautiful landscape of florals and greenery and with the glorious lake as their backdrop. Their wedding day was exactly as they had imagined -- a mix of laid-back comfortability with sweet simplicity.

Golf carts shuttled guests from the parking area at Stone Gardens on the Lake to the ceremony area and as guests arrived at the estate, they were greeted first by the Best Man and Groom and then served mimosas and pink lemonade as they waited for the ceremony to begin.

Following the Bridesmaids procession to the Beatles' "And I Love Her", Jacquie was escorted down the stone steps by her father to Steve Earl's "Sparkle and Shine".

The ceremony took place on the pergola in front of a vast blue lake and a lantern lit in memory of both their grandfathers and other family members who had passed. Once pronounced husband and wife, the couple left the altar to "Wouldn't It be Nice" by the Beach Boys and guests were treated to mojitos.

During cocktails, guests gathered once again on the Pergola for the Bride and Groom's First Dance -- a choreographed number to "Stay" by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.

Jacquie and George arrived in a 1972 Chevrolet truck at the reception which was held at Brio Gusto -- a quaint local restaurant in the heart of Peterborough. The restaurant's oak tables and booths were dressed with an abundance of lilies, rose and candles. Along with menus peeking out from purple napkins, advice cards were left for the guests upon which to write marital advice. Flip flops waited for aching feet in a large basket on the dance floor and seating cards were pinned to a bulletin board decorated by the bride.

Served restaurant-style, guests enjoyed a menu comprised of salad, Spiced Red Lentil Soup, PEI Striploin and Free-range Chevre and Fig Stuffed Chicken and Apple Crisp or Chocolate Brownie for dessert.

After humorous and touching speeches and the cutting of the cake, the party kicked off with the wedding party showing their skills at the "Twist".

"Our favourite part about our wedding was that we were able to have so much fun!" Jacquie says, "From the moment we woke up to the moment that we fell asleep; we had smiles on our faces. It is so incredible to be able to create a day with all of your favourite people, your favourite food, your favourite drinks, music, flowers, etc. What more could a couple ask for?!!! And to top it all off, we had our 96 and 100-year-old Grandmas in attendance and all six of the Groomsmen were on the dance floor for the first dance -- the Twist!"

THREE THINGS I'M LOVIN'
RIGHT NOW

Another wedding season ends and another event planning season begins. Here are just a few of the concepts and items of which I'm stoked that my clients are taking advantage of right now.

RAW, UNPOLISHED SPACES
AND UNBELIEVABLE TRANSFORMATIONS

I absolutely love that clients are thinking outside the lavish ballroom and choosing raw, unpolished spaces in which to work their event magic. Whether it's a heritage building with exposed brick, an empty warehouse space or barns and hangers, these empty slates provide a wealth of opportunity for any theme from lavish to eclectic to off-beat.

I'm also loving that clients who have chosen a typical banquet hall for their function aren't taking what's offered lying down. What I mean is that they aren't accepting the banquet room at face value but instead are choosing to transform the room into a sweet, non-traditional space through various elements including uplighting, projections, draping, linen choices and more. For example, a client of Et Lofte Events is opting for the street-haute look for their fete with grafitti projected on the walls and rustic linens combined with every day street items incorporated into their decor (think bicycle wheels, chapboards and blown out umbrellas)!

UNEXPECTED FOOD CHOICES

There's something to be said for choosing to dine off the beaten path. I'm stoked that wedding clients are choosing cultural food that is completely opposite of their ethnic background. I'm talking about a Polish couple choosing Thai for their menu or Indian cuisine showcased at an Asian couple's wedding. I'm also stoked to see totally unusual food themes like "fast food restaurant" inspired stations.

I'm also lovin' that clients are offering food stations that have fun, interactive elements such as stack-it-yourself poutine stations that offering a wide variety of toppings rather than just your standard cheese curds and gravy, ice-cream sandwich stations with a variety of ice-cream flavours or passed popcorn in a variety of flavours including curry.

SURPRISE ENTERTAINMENT FOR WEDDINGS AND CELEBRATIONS

DJs and bands will forever be staples of weddings and celebrations. And I'm always fond of having your entertainment options match your theme for continuity. But I'm also over-the-moon with the idea of surprise entertainment -- meaning having an element of entertainment that is completely off-kilter from your theme or out of a wedding couple's comfort zone. Just how off-kilter do I mean? I'm speaking of hip hop instructors teaching wedding guests some funky dance moves, fortune tellers offering advice for the future during cocktails, a scavenger hunt challenge or live glass blowers during dinner. The possibilities are endless!

HALLOWEEN PARTY THEMES
THAT ARE JUST SO

There are two holidays each year that bring out the kid in all of us -- and Halloween is one of them. I mean, what's not to love? Loads of candy, dressing up, a good fright, loads of candy...did I mention loads of candy???

But our Halloween fetes don't have to be traditional. They don't have to be that same old haunted house decorated in orange and black with jack-o-lanterns in every crook and cranny and skeletons hanging from the doorways. Oh no. Halloween begs for creativity and so this Halloween, hop on your broomstick and fly in another direction. From the posh soiree or the cute child-like carousal to the utmost creepy affair, give your guests a real treat -- a Halloween party they won't be expecting.

TIM BURTON'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Tim Burton is a genius at making anything dark. And while Alice in Wonderland has been a theme for everything from weddings to tea parties, why not extend it's quirky, dark capability to Halloween? Warped clocks, mismatched tabletops and one (in my opinion) creepy looking Mad Hatter all lend themselves to endless possibilities with this theme. Take a twist on the Eat Me, Drink Me tags for edible goodies and add a darker message. Turn that cute white rabbit into a matted, rabid animal. Challenge your guests to dress up like their favourite character -- Tim Burton style. However you choose to do it, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is a unique theme to an old tradition.

CIRQUE DU...FREAK

We all know how visually stunning Cirque du Soleil can be. In fact, it's my dream theme for any event. But taking a darker stab at a happy, child-like theme like the circus and twisting the knife to make it dark and creepy will give you that Halloween party with a certain je ne sais quoi. Evil lion tamers, scary clowns, faceless showgirls, creepy puppets, rabid animals, popcorn containers filled with red-tinted popcorn...there's nothing scarier than turning a childish fantasy into a nightmare.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK BIRDS

Alfred Hitchcock was a literal film making genius. Why not pay him homage with a Halloween tribute party to one of his most famous films, Birds? Easy to do and a vast land of possibilities, this party falls into the Halloween spirit but without going overly spooky. Scatter endless fake crows about the room and sitting on vintage home accents like old clocks, mirrors, telephones, bird cages, etc. Strategically place black feathers in everything from door wreaths to napkin rings. Have the famous black and white movie projected silently on a blank wall in the room.

DON'T BE PETRIFIED OF POSH PURPLE & BLACK

Who says that Halloween has to be scary? Or orange and black for that matter? Take a more sophisticated approach to Halloween by pairing purple with black for everything from linens and napkins to decorative accents. Paint miniature pumpkins purple and scatter them along a black tabletop among the occasional black crow sporting a thin purple ribbon bow. Attach purple glitter-covered spiders to napkin rings and hang them from chandeliers. Adorn your front door with a purple and black feather wreath. Serve purple and black cupcakes and purple martinis. Or to spice things up a bit, throw in a hint of lime green. While being petrified is the main theme of Halloween there's no rule that says it can't be posh too.

VIVIENNE & MICHAEL:
BEAUTY + ENTERTAINMENT = ONE GLORIOUS WEDDING

As a Planner, it's inevitable to grow close to your clients and have them leave a lasting impression on both your career and your life. But it's not often that you have a couple that are so genuinely happy and fun that you can't help but leave their presence...well, happy! Vivienne was one of those Brides whose personality was so darling that you would literally want to squish her. And Michael, her Groom, was equally fabulous with an amazing sense of humour, a charming personality and an incredible desire to make their wedding everything that Vivenne dreamed of and that their guests would never forget.

A UNIQUE VIDEO EXPERIENCE

Much like what photography offers, videography for a wedding or event provides the host opportunities to relive their special day again and again and again. However gone are the days of cheesy video effects and basic step by step accounts and in their place are documentary style wonders that view like a music video. Emotional. Brilliantly captured. Toronto-based James Frodyma Wedding Films came into event film making after five years of previous experience directing documentaries, television commercials and numerous short films. Coming from a background outside of event film-making allows for a unique approach to both filming and editing your personal story. Here Frodyma shares his top 4 tips to obtaining that unique approach.

1. OPEN UP TO YOUR CINEMATOGRAPHER

One of the first things that Frodyma does as a cinematographer is meet with the clients over lunch or coffee to have a conversation about everything from where they grew up, how a couple met to where the clients see their life going after the wedding or event.

"While one of the best parts of this job is often befriending your couples" James Frodyma says, "the main motivation for us to get together is for me to really get to know them and hear their story".

Opening the chapters of your life and personality gives the cinematographer an opportunity to build a profile of what kind of client he will be shooting for. Are the clients adventurous or are they more low key? do they love the spotlight or prefer a more subtle approach? Each of these pieces of information gives the cinematographer clues as to how to approach the wedding or event and what style of shooting and editing best matches their personality. Building a strong profile is the first step to creating a film that is unique to the client and visually stunning.

2. A DOCUMENTARY APPROACH WILL HAVE YOU LOOKING YOUR BEST

Filming a wedding or event from a documentary approach means that the day is filmed as it happens and the cinematographer lets things happen in front of the camera organically.

"I don't try to interfere or try to manufacture emotions on your day" Frodyma explains, "I'm simply there to document real events and real emotions as they happen".

With the exception of specially allocated time (for example formal wedding photo sessions), documentary style shooting 'from a distance' has its benefits. The documentary style cinematographer makes sure that from the moment they hit record, the clients aren't even aware that they are being filmed. This is the best way to ensure that the client is relaxed and more natural, which will always look better on camera. It removes the pressure of having a camera in your face.

"And, well, the footage and end product speaks for itself" Frodyma says.

3. WITH REGARDS TO WEDDINGS, ALLOCATE SOME ONE-ON-ONE TIME WITH YOUR CINEMATOGRAPHER

One of the most underutilized times during a wedding day is the photo shoot session where the photographer normally takes charge. Most cinematographers simply shoot some "behind the scenes" footage of your photographer leading the session. But taking advantage of your cinematographers' presence on-site will provide an opportunity for him or her to shoot something that will really WOW people.

"I recently shot a wedding for a couple that were interested in doing something special and we came up with the idea of a bridal reveal to her groom before the ceremony," says Frodyma, "We took some time to plan out a route where the Bride would walk to meet her Groom for the first time. This was an idea specifically meant for their wedding film and we were able to set up and execute a beautiful scene where the couple met for the first time".

Meeting with and talking to your cinematographer about your own personal ideas and desires for your wedding memories will create a unique and memorable scene for your wedding film.

4. LET YOUR CINEMATOGRAPHER KNOW OF YOUR PLANS!

Nothing can sabotage your wedding film faster than poor planning. It's important that whomever is documenting your wedding or event -- whether its a cinematographer or photographer -- has a clear idea of what is coming up next. This is even more crucial during a reception when it comes to filming. An appointed person -- whether it be a family member, person within your wedding party, the MC or ahem, the wedding/event planner -- should be informing the cinematographer a few minutes before any specific event takes place in the reception. This is because the cinematographer will need time to get into position to ensure that they are ready to roll. For cinematographers this includes time to turn on their microphones, recording devices and setting up their cameras to catch the event from multiple angles.

With no notice, there's a risk of catching your cinematographer flat footed and having them missing a crucial part of your event. It's not worth the risk especially when you consider how easy it can be to keep them in the loop. A clear, precise itinerary coupled with a point person ensures that no moments are missed.

Sharing your personal stories with your cinematographer, keeping them appraised of your plans and giving them the time and opportunity to get creative will allow for your cinematographer to capture compelling story lines and offer you a film that's as unique as your memories.

UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE
OF THE CHARGER

Recently This Planner was discussing table decor with a client and when I suggested having Chargers on the table he raised his eyebrows.

"What are those for?" he asked, "to make the table pretty?"

Well yes and no.

Charger plates have enjoyed quite a boom in use over the last decade. While in the past Chargers could have been viewed as "luxury" decorative elements for tabletops, over the past decade Chargers can be seen on tabletops at every type of event from weddings to in-home parties.

But while Chargers have increased in popularity, many hosts don't have a thorough understanding of just what the role of the Charger is. Yes, it looks quite pretty on the table. But it does have a purpose other than being decorative and there is etiquette involved.

Chargers (their name is derived from the French word "chargeour" which means 'to load') serve two main purposes. One purpose is dress up a formal tabletop by adding colour and texture. Chargers should always match your colour scheme and/or your event's overall theme. Chargers come in a wide variety of colours and materials from plastic, wood and bamboo to glass, metal and mirror. This leaves endless possibilities when it comes to tying in your Chargers with your theme.

The other purpose of Chargers is to catch spills or food residue. The first few courses preceding the main course rest on top of the chargers and serve as an under-plate, catching anything that may fall. More often than not, if you use a Charger those fancy-dancy linens will stay quite clean!

The etiquette regarding chargers? Well first of all, you don't eat off of them! No food should ever touch the charger! Chargers should be set approximately one inch from the edge of the table between your silverware and should already be on the tables when guests arrive. While it's not appropriate to have food directly on the Charger, it is perfectly acceptable to rest your folded napkins on its surface.

Etiquette is also in place with regards to the removal of chargers. Technically, historical etiquette states that the Chargers should be removed from the tables before the Main Course. Nowadays however, hosts choose to keep the Charger in place for the Main Course and all courses prior. This modern practice is viewed as acceptable however modern etiquette states that the Charger should then be removed prior to dessert.

Charger plates add that extra oomph! to any event decor and with that added style comes an understated, humble practicality. Some of This Planner's faves?

DELANEY & CANDIDO:
TAKING THE 'TYPICAL' OUT OF 'WEDDING'

When I first sat down with Delaney and Candido, the Portuguese couple were adamant about one thing. They wanted a unique experience for their guests. Delaney, who works at The Hospital for Sick Children and Candido, a police officer, wanted to align their food with Portuguese tradition -- lots of food coupled with a seafood buffet. And so they had chosen Europa Convention Centre's downtown location in 'Little Portugal' as their venue. But making their food a priority brought on one big challenge for the couple.

It was a venue that hosted a lot of Portuguese weddings and the couple wanted anything but a "typical Portuguese wedding".

And so This Planner designed a wedding for Delaney and Candido that would not only set their wedding apart from what their guests would be anticipating but that also was child-friendly and reflected the couple's personalities: Delaney -- fun loving, passionate about children and obsessed with shoes, and Candido -- a laid back police officer with tongue-in-cheek humour. And both shared a love for espresso.

For the wedding day, the Bride donned a Jim Helm French Lace gown and cathedral length veil (changing later to a fabulous lime fascinator for the reception) and green pumps. Her son Nathan, also the Ring Bearer, let his personality shine with green Converse sneakers. The Groom channeled 'suave' in his Harry Rosen suit yet kept things light-hearted with his accessories.

The ceremony was held at St. Agnes Church in Little Portugal. Guests were given bubbles to float as the Bride and Groom walked the aisle.

For the reception, the colours of lime green and purple were evident and vibrant in everything from the centerpieces to the linens. Choosing to mix things up a bit structurally with alternating round and square tables, we had the centerpieces alternate as well -- one made up of curly willow, florals and crystals and the other made up of bamboo, florals and teardrop candles -- to keep the guests' visuals enticed. And enticed they were -- Sherwin from Petals and Twigs put his creativity to task in creating the stunning floral designs.

Keeping in mind Candido's profession as a police officer and Delaney's sense of humour, we created a guestbook out of actual speeding tickets for the guests to write. The Seating Arrangements were showcased on Firing Range Target designed by Koket Designs. And their blend of personalities were displayed atop their card box.

For the guests' favours, the couple gave away espresso beans by Barzula for the adults and an assortment of goodies for the many children that were present. The aroma of the espresso paired nicely with the aroma of the sliced mango and vanilla wedding cake designed by Andy's Wedding Cakes.

Then there were the interactive elements. We wanted to tap into Delaney's playful side and love for children, but also to keep guests entertained throughout the evening. A throw-back to our own childhood, Cootie-catchers with trivia about the couple rested on tabletops. Brad from Skip A Beat Entertainment kept guests guessing with a "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" Kissing Game (not to mention crowding the dance floor later in the evening) and Bobby Motta from Motta Magic roamed the cocktail hour flabergasting guests with his illusions. Later in the evening, the backdrop behind the Head Table drew back to reveal Motta Magic, returning for a full parlour show.

Guests entering the banquet room were overheard gushing about the vibrant and stunning visuals, personalized detail and entertaining aspects... giving Delaney and Candido exactly what they wanted: a unique experience for their guests setting them apart from "a typical wedding".

THE THREE E's TO PLANNING
ANY SUCCESSFUL EVENT

Whether it's a Wedding, Birthday Bash, Anniversary Party or any social event, there are three extremely important factors in planning that should never be overlooked or taken lightly. There's an old saying that goes "You never want a 'But' event". What this means is that you don't want an event after which your guests say "The [said event] was beautiful BUT...". The three E's to planning any successful event are easy to remember and will save you from that dreaded "BUT" event.

NUMBER ONE: THE EDIBLES

The food and beverages served at your event should be of the highest priority in your planning. Guests always arrive at an event anticipating great food. Think of the last time you arrived at an event. What was your first thought about the event before arriving (Ok, Ok, aside from whether or not you were looking fabulous)? It was likely something along the lines of "I wonder what kind of food they'll be serving" or, if you haven't eaten all day, "there had better be food!".

So now imagine walking into the said event and there was very little food offered. Or the food that was offered tasted bland, dry or...gasp!...unusual. Ruined your whole evening didn't it?

Your 'EDIBLES' should be presentable, tasty, creative and most importantly, there should be enough to go around! The same can be said for your beverages. Ensure that the quantity and quality is there. That wine being served with dinner should be paired correctly and of proper quality. Consider a minimum of 3 drinks per person for the average social party and much higher consumption for larger events such as weddings. For cocktail receptions, match your beverage choices to the theme and the food that is being passed.

Food and Beverage at your event is the most important element to any event. Give it the attention it warrants and budget accordingly.

NUMBER TWO: THE ENTERTAINMENT

There's nothing worse than an empty dance floor.

Or a boring event for that matter.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many mistakes that the host can make when selecting the entertainment for their event. It's not as simple as booking just any DJ, Band or Performer -- there are many factors to consider.

One factor is your guest majority or 'audience'. Are they mostly low-key kind of folk or are they party animals? Do they want to be "entertained" or would they rather be left alone to dance (whether they can or can't dance is irrelevant)? Are there children present (is it all children?) or is the event adults-only ? Recognizing who your guest majority is will help to determine the entertainment that will best...well...entertain them!

Also consider the style of the event. Is it black-tie? A casual affair? A wedding in a barn? This will play an important role in choosing your style of entertainment whether you've chosen a band, a DJ or any other entertainment.

And trust your professionals! Try to not burden your DJ or Band with an extensive "Must Play" list. While your super-lengthy list may be comprised of songs that you think are ah-mazing, your guests may think otherwise. The same can be said for extensive "Do Not Play" lists. While you may despise country, a large portion of your guests may love it. Your entertainment professional may be bogged down with requests for country yet he has to turn away disappointed party dwellers because you said so. A talented and experienced entertainment professional can gage his or her audience and keep your dance floor crowded and your guests entertained. A small list of "Do Not Plays" are perfectly fine. Handing your entertainment professional a manual, is not.

Yes, it's your event. Heck, it may be an event in your honour. But as the host of any event, at some point the event stops being all about you and becomes all about your guests.

In a nutshell, whatever entertainment professional you've chosen was selected out of dozens for a reason. That said, let the entertainment professional do their job and provide guidance if you truly want to...just let it be minimal guidance. After all, there's a reason you're not behind that spin table or up on that stage...right?

NUMBER THREE: THE ETIQUETTE

This Planner has always been a big fan of breaking the rules when it comes to planning events. However, as much of a rebel as I am, there are certain areas in event planning where I feel that the rules shouldn't be broken. 'ETIQUETTE' is one of those areas.

Etiquette exists for a reason. It shows respect. Period. And so when planning any event, etiquette should be kept at the forefront of your mind. Rather than be worried that you'll appear 'stuffy' or 'pretentious' by following proper etiquette, worry more about coming across as 'rude' or 'disrespectful'.

Now, when I refer to etiquette I'm not necessarily talking about where to place your cutlery on a table. I'm more zero'd in on etiquette that directly relates to your guests. For example, NEVER be late for your own event. For some reason, some guests of honour, Bride and Grooms, etc. have this unbelievable idea that "the party can't start without me and it's 'my day' so let them wait".

Pardon me?

Your guests don't care that you couldn't decide on what to wear, that you had to stop to pick up pantyhose or that you want more wedding photos in addition to what was originally scheduled. What your guests DO care about is that they're tired of standing around waiting for you, they're starving and their night has seriously begun to drag on and on. If your party is set to start at a certain time, it had better start at that time unless there's something beyond your control to prevent it from starting on time.

Another enormous etiquette blunder? Never expect your guests to pay for their own beverages -- alcoholic or otherwise. If you hosted a gathering at your home would you charge your guests for the drinks they consumed? Absolutely not! So why then, would it be alright to charge your guests for their beverages merely because the party has moved from your home to a more commercial establishment? Your guests are your personal guests, they're not customers.

Oh and in case you were thinking 'loonie/twoonie' bars, drink tickets, etc were a better option than 'cash bars'....really? This is a hosted function, not a carnival. Think again.

Always keep in mind that etiquette is a form of respect for your guests. Follow etiquette and you'll never have disgruntled guests. Ignore it and you may have guests that won't feel disrespected but you may have guests that do. And that can ruin any event at any time, whether the event just started or it's towards its end. It's not worth the risk.

So there you have it! Following the three 'E's above will not only ensure that you have a hugely successful event but takes the guess-work out of whether or not your event will be a crowd pleaser.

When in doubt, just remember this: if your edibles are lacking, the entertainment downright sucks and you've made your guests wait over an hour to begin dinner because you chose to be late...THAT is what your guests will remember of your event. Not what your centerpieces looked like.

A LIL' BIT OF FRESH N' FAB
STYLE SHOOT SPRING 2011

Spring in Toronto was well...not very Spring-like. In fact it was pretty drab and dreary. So back in March when This Planner ventured to do a Style Shoot for Spring 2011, I chose a colour palette and concept that, to me, felt fresh, funky and fabulous and that I knew would chase the Un-Spring-like blues of any Bride away.

And so I set up camp at the ever-so-funky and totally versatile Berkeley Event Centre. Keeping "elegance meets a bit of funk" in mind I opted to pair vibrant lime green with black for boldness and used geometric shaping in the table decor to add that bit of structure. Careful to not go too brash however, Sherwin from Petals and Twigs and I chose to work with gorgeous cymbidium orchids and frosted candlesto bring the 'elegance' into the vision.

And then there were the fish. To keep the ambiance lighthearted and fresh we added a playful, surprise element to the table -- two Black Morrow goldfish swimming about front and center. (NOTE: no fish were harmed in the making of this Style Shoot. In fact, they are now the well-loved pets of my 2 year old son)

For a unique take on menus and favours I decided to combine the two., I created Menu Cubes which displayed the courses on each side of the cube. Inside, the cube offered a tasty treat as a takeaway.

And of course there was the attire. The fabulous thing about the overall concept of this shoot was that the Bride had endless possibilities for attire -- sophisticated, edgy or elegant she would fit right in with her surroundings. Which was great as I had trouble deciding between the two gowns!

This suave gown from The Brides Project is my favourite gown at the shoot. It was absolutely unique as it was redesigned from a completely out-of-date gown by a faculty member at Ryerson University. Pair it up with a super cute fascinator by Absolutely Fascinating and voila!

Another gown from The Brides Project offered elegance but a hint of fun as well. The corseted center was made with sheer, beaded fabric creating a playful "peek-a-boo" look!

Last, but definitely not least, the cake designed by Cakes by Andy, beautifully kept in line with the geometrics in the concept and its creative floral designs add a hint of elegance.

Designing the edible is a work of art that takes precision, patience and a whole lot of creativity in order to pull off something that's not just unique but that tastes good too!

For additional "wow" personalize the dessert or cake table with items that mean something to you as a wedding couple, party host or guest of honour.

As a designer with a contemporary and creative eye, Ida also encourages wedding clients specifically to think outside 'the wedding box'.

"I hate to say this because it's sounds so cliche", she says, "but a true cake designer is inspired by so much more than the wedding world like invitations, flowers and dresses". Examine your surroundings, interests, nature and more to come up with some truly unique designs.

Flowers can be a key element in the design of a wedding and if you're striving to make your overall design unique there are a few things to keep in mind. Perhaps one of the most important things is to hire a professional. While DIY flowers (a.k.a running to your neighbourhood Costco, buying flowers in bulk and tossing them into a vase) will likely be easy on the wallet, if you're not savvy on the specifics of your desired florals not to mention how to arrange the flowers appropriately, maintain their look for hours on end or create that unique factor that you're after...well...you're more likely to be left with a simple arrangement that lacks lustre as well as some thorn pricks and a lot of frustration.

Nicole North, the uber-talented owner and designer at Petals Stems & Leaves -- a Custom Floral and Event Design Studio -- says that one thing to remember is that wedding flowers should reflect your personal style. After all, you want the flowers to make you happy right? While some couples may reflect their personal style in choosing a certain colour scheme or specific flower, others may use a central theme or a flower that rings sentiment such as "the one" that the Groom had used to propose to his Bride or that flower that always sat on Grandma's dining room table.

Nicole also encourages couples to stretch the boundaries of what is traditional -- you don't have to have what everyone else does! Let your floral designer get to know you as they'll be able to suggest flowers that will suit your taste as well as make constructive suggestions.

Colour is also one of the most important elements that affects the overall appearance and sets the tone.

"Couples need to coordinate -- but not necessarily match -- and consider all aspects of the wedding in relation to colour", Nicole explains, "Aspects such as the Season, the Bridesmaid Dresses, the linens, the cake, ceremony and reception locations and, of course, their flower choices".

With the ability to add beauty, depth and interest to even the smallest of arrangements, texture is a must and as important as colour. However Nicole advises that texture doesn't have to be focused only on the flowers. The foliage in an arrangement or even the container that holds the arrangement can create texture as well.

And last...location, location, location! Taking the location into account is of huge significance.

"I know that I've mentioned this in the colour aspect, but it's not just the colours at your location that you need to thing about", Nicole says, "Take into consideration the style of venue. For example is the location contemporary or art deco? Also consider the surroundings such as how tall the ceilings are and whether there are windows in the room".

When it comes to flowers for a wedding the possibilities are endless. Whether your personal style is sophisticated and elegant or funky and wild, flowers can accentuate the little details and aid in carrying through the overall ambiance from the ceremony to the bouquet toss.

Guests can either dip their donuts or create their own doughnut holes with their choice of filling. SWEETENING THE DEAL:

This is not to say that traditions aren't important but the truth of the matter is that you have to be happy with the look and feel of your event. The ever-so-talented Event Design Specialists at Mode Function -- Jeffery Crawford and Michael Alonso -- have comprised below their top 5 tips for designing a wedding or event that reflects what matters to you:

Understand the Mood that you want to create.

Are you looking to create a romantic fairytale environment? Are you chic and sophisticated or do you appreciate a more casual look? According to Jeffery and Michael, understanding what mood you want to convey to your guests is the foundation for creating a look that is all your own and they suggest that browsing through Google Images or a wedding magazine will help if you're unsure of what mood you're after.

"If you're the type of person that gets bogged down with all that wedding decor then why not look to other areas of design for your inspiration", Jeffery says, "We find a great deal of inspiration from hoe decor interior design, fashion and art".

"Collect inspiration or 'mood' pictures", Michael suggests, "Once you have a healthy dose of pictures that speak to you, match them up in groups with similar styles or colour pallets and create a 'mood board'. Then rate the 'mood boards' to narrow down your favourites".

Add elements that reflect you and your personality, celebrating what is important to you.

Are you a photographer? Why not showcase your talent by way of being a background for table numbers? Did you meet your fiance in Paris? Add some Parisian fare to your menu! Adding in subtle nods to your life's passions puts your personal touch on things. You can also use your passions to build an entire theme around what makes you happy. If you're an outdoor enthusiast with little interest in frills, base your theme around the great outdoors. Mode Function suggests selecting elements like earth tone linens, centerpieces that incorporate branch details or even the simplest of touches like placing a leaf on each of your guests' napkins.

Know what you like and dislike.

The so-called "rules" of weddings and events have changed so never feel that you must play it safe and follow what tradition dictates. If you're not a flower person, don't feel obligated to use flowers in your decor. There are an abundance of options out there that can serve as your primary decor element. For example, why not opt for an Ice Sculpture Centerpiece of your initials in place of the more traditional floral-based centerpiece?

Know your budget!

You may not know how much things cost but you definitely know how much money you are comfortable spending. If you find that budget is an issue, pick a few elements from your "wish list" that will offer the most impact and run with it.

"Creating the right environment for your guests does not always mean quantity," Jeffery clarifies, "Selecting the right quality of elements will go much further in creating that right environment".

Be consistent and follow through.

Once you have unlocked the overall vision of your decor repeat the elements. If you are doing a nature inspired theme for example, ensure that you have elements of nature repeated throughout your wedding or event from start to finish. If you a "bling" look then add hints of "bling" to your bouquet as well as your centerpiece, not just either or. If you are using pink as one of your colours then make sure pink is continued throughout the entire wedding or event.

ARE CHAIR COVERS A THING OF THE PAST?

There seems to be a sentiment that's spreading throughout the wedding and event industry that leaves one to wonder the fate of one of the most classic decor elements in event design.

Chair covers are so passe.

With a plethora of alternative seating options popping up in events and weddings, the classic form of covering up unsightly chairs and adding to the overall look of an event seems to be in danger of extinction.

Implementing a wide range of trendy seating from "chiavari chairs" to more geometric options like ottomans, more and more Planners, couples and Designers are changing the way we view where we should be resting our behinds at events.

To This Planner this change in design is both refreshing and somewhat saddening. While I agree that traditional covers like chair wraps that drape along the floor and tie at the back are quickly losing their elegance status by adding bulkiness to design in a time that demands sleek modernism; I also feel that breaking free of the traditional dressing altogether to follow the latest trend may be a mistake. After all, chair covers like the classic stretch cover and the "Kelly" can still cover up ghastly banquet chairs while adding smooth sophistication and texture (depending on the overall design of course!)

And then there's those chair covers that defy our traditional notion of Chair Covers like these babies from Preston Bailey:

At the same time, This Planner is stoked to see new materials and a unique line of thinking be shared with one of the most overlooked elements in bringing a vision to life. By moving on from traditional notions of seating the sky seems to be limit as we incorporate elements that we encounter everyday to park our tushes.

Chiavari chairs seem to be still one of the most popular alternatives to chair covers. Available in a significant range of colours from white and black to silver and mahogany, these chairs have the versatility to give off both a sleek appearance or a more charming aura.

Ghost Chairs are quickly becoming one of the most utilized chair options for events due to their sleek appearance and their ability to match virtually any colour palette.

Couches are also a popular choice for seating when paired up with sleek glass tables or table linens, sophisticated table accessories and colourful uplighting. By combining computability with style, couches give events a loungy yet suave feel.

Ottomans are on the rise as alternatives to traditional seating. From simple fabric-covered blocks to more wider, bench-like styles, ottomans are adding that modern geometric touch to the sleekest of events. TIP: if ottomans are your desired choice of seating be sure to have some traditional chairs for those with back issues, small children, etc.

Benches paired up with long rectangular tables can give off an intimate, communal feel. Whether accessorizing the benches with coloured padding or leaving benches bare for a more rustic appearance, benches are a fabulous space saver while blending the past with the present.

TIP: Like Ottomans benches don't have a backing and so be sure to have more traditional seating for those with back issues, etc. You may also want to have some cushions available for those who find the "rustic" bench slightly uncomfortable.

Arm chairs have recently inserted themselves into the line-up of seating choices alongside the couch and the ottoman. Albeit rather bulky in design, arm chairs can come in a variety of colours and fabrics from deep felt to metallic plastic and showcase a somewhat contemporary yet regal design to an event.

And of course, opting for truly unique seating options will always be This Planner's top choice. Some of our favourites? Wine barrels for a vintage-style event at a winery, bean bag chairs arranged around coffee tables for a relaxed, yet colourful Bar Mitzvah and our all time fave -- an eclectic grouping of antique and modern chairs collected from numerous sources arranged at rectangular harvest tables.

Bespoke Millinery has been predicted to be one of the hottest trends of 2011. If that's true, then International Award-winning milliner David Dunkley can likely be considered one of the pioneers. Combine artistic flair with demure and boldness and you have fascinators, hats and headpieces that drop the jaw and, in some cases, seem to defy gravity. Having studied with the former royal milliner to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (you can't get more impressive than that!), Dunkley's fashions have been worn by members of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's royal entourage and at functions held by Her Majesty herself.

TRASH TALK:
TRASHING THE DRESS VS. GLAMORIZING THE GOWN

Recently I had a chat with Toronto photographer Richard Emmanuel about "Trash the Dress" sessions and how they've evolved over the last few years. Where once the infamous "Trash the Dress" (or TTD if you will) was about getting 'down and dirty' with your pre-loved wedding gown, some Brides are now shying away from ruining their gown and are opting to "Glamorize the Gown" instead.

What's "Glamorize the Gown"? While similar to TTD, "Glamorize the Gown" is set up as more of a fashion magazine-style shoot. It's often set in more urban, fashionable -- yet still creative -- surroundings however it doesn't involve heavy soiling, ripping, etc but rather confident posing, strutting your stuff and looking oh-so-fine. TTD on the other hand gets the most out of unusual settings and isn't afraid to turn that gown from gorgeous to ghastly. This Planner considers it the alter-ego of 'Glamorize the Gown'. While GTG is beauty, TTD is rock.

Would this new 'Glamorize the Gown' trend make rumoured originator of TTD John Michael Cooper wince and groan?

First, let's take a look at exactly what how "Trash the Dress" sessions got started. TTD (or "Rock the Frock" as some know it) has been said to have been popularized by Las Vegas photographer John Michael Cooper (*swoon*) with his unbelievable creativity and serious magazine-esque photography skills.

TTD began as a declaration of sorts -- one that declared that the marriage is complete and that the dress would never be worn again. And the shoots began as Post-Wedding Brides ripping, soiling and essentially destroying their gowns in settings that greatly contrasted the "innocence" or "purity" of the traditional white gown. Perhaps in some cases TTD still currently stands as this declaration however since 2001 it had evolved into something of a liberation for Brides. Trashing their wedding gown was a way to break free of the little-miss-innocent or little-miss-gracious persona of their wedding day and embrace their wild side, letting out their alter ego (and lookin' damn fine while doin' it!).

Today, while TTD is still an extremely popular trend among newlyweds (even Grooms have been getting into the action lately!), 'Glamorize the Gown' is increasing in popularity. Rather than break free completely from that "Angel-in-White" persona, Brides have been giving it a bit of a kick by capturing their "Sugar-and-Spice" identities on film. Diva-esque, fashionable and incredibly hot, "Glamorize the Gown" sessions are becoming a way for Brides to exhibit their inner confidence and show off their smoldering side without destroying that $5000 dress.

This Planner is a huge fan of all things unconventional and I'm always very quick to praise those professionals who embrace non-conformity and exude extreme creativity. Like Event Planning, Photography is one of those professions where it's not just about skill and an eye for detail but about creativity and imagination.

Enter John Michael Cooper of AltF Photography.

This is one photographer whose creativity knows no bounds. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cooper's slogan is “very different" and everything about this photographer from his company name to photographic style captures that very thought. Edgy and definitely not your average romantic approach to wedding images yet still hauntingly beautiful, Cooper has defied what was always expected when it came to event photography.

"I had a lot of people tell me, ‘Oh, no, that won’t work. You can’t do that for brides, they won’t like that kind of stuff.’ But I did it anyway, regardless, and things just started taking off from there." Cooper has said in an interview with Digital Pro.

Cooper first received national attention with his "dress unfriendly" concept of art that inspired the wedding industry's current Trash the Dress trend. His infamous Bride-on-Fire photo instantaneously sparked a desire among Brides to liberate themselves from the innocent-angel-in-white persona and create dramatic, poignant art that would be remembered just as long as their wedding day.

The beauty of John Michael Cooper's talent is that not only has he has perfectly blended the art of posed photography with documentary or photo-journalistic photography but he has also managed to set the bar in terms of applying imagination, originality and a taste of rebelliousness.

In this Planner's opinion, John Michael Cooper has effectively and forever changed the traditional notion of how life celebrations should be photographed.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
FOR YOUR NEW YEAR OF EVENT PLANNING

While for many New Years Resolutions wind up being nothing more than a To Do List for the first week of January, those who are planning a grand-scale event know that their commitments must be long term and stand strong. Most large events can take a year or more to plan and with that comes challenges and temptations that aren't easily avoided.

Here are a few resolutions that might help your event or wedding planning in 2011 become slightly less daunting (and some wee advice to go along with them!):

"I WILL PLAN MY EVENT WITHIN MY FINANCIAL MEANS/STICK TO MY PLANNING BUDGET"

This resolution can be a tricky one to keep a handle on. You've likely set a budget for your event but temptations, not to mention sticker-shock, can easily derail your efforts if you let them.

Ensuring that you stick to your estimated budget will save you a lot of financial stress both pre and post event date. While the said event is likely to be a stand-alone event in your life, you have to ask yourself if it's worth going into debt for. If not, creating and managing a specific budget will help you in creating an event that all will enjoy (and one that won't slap you with collection calls later on).

However while sticking to a budget is important, it's also necessary to be realistic with your plans and your budget. If you're planning an sit-down dinner reception for 200 guests for example you have to expect that a budget of $30,000 for all details involved may not cut it. Do your research and find out if your budget and plans are realistic or require some tweaking. If your steadfast budget doesn't seem to get you what you want, keeping an open mind to alternative options is key to your sanity and your accounting. Consider shortening your guest list, moving your event from the evening to the day (when food and beverage costs tend to be more budget friendly) or changing your event from a sit-down function to a cocktail reception.

It's also important to understand that you get what you pay for. For example, understand that a cake designer can't create an elaborate boutique-style five tier, fondant-icing cake for a mere $400. Don't expect that because you're on a strict budget your vendors are going to sympathize and negotiate their fees/costs. If your budget is $400 then you have to accept what $400 will get you. If that's not satisfactory then accept that you will go over your budget.

"I WILL CONSIDER PROPER ETIQUETTE WHEN PLANNING MY EVENT"

Yes, this event that you're planning is likely about YOU. Or it's entirely plausible that you are solely shouldering the load of planning an event for someone else and so you feel entitled to do things YOUR WAY. But keep in mind that while the event may be all about you, you are the host and with being a host comes certain etiquette and responsibilities -- first and foremost, taking proper care of your guests.

So often and especially in the case of weddings, etiquette gets tossed out the window due to laziness, financial strains or the classic "well it's my party" attitude. Many planners feel that etiquette is silly, outdated and stuffy. Yet Professional Event Planners can guarantee that if you exercise improper etiquette with your chosen event it's improper etiquette that your guests will remember above everything else.

Here are some of the most common etiquette infractions that you will want to avoid:

- being late for your event/ceremony/wedding
- making your guests wait an extended period of time FOR ANYTHING
- expecting your guests to pay for their beverages (a.k.a the horrific cash bar scenario)
- putting address labels on invitations/thank you cards rather than handwriting them
- typing or writing generic thank you cards
- taking a year to send out thank you cards or worse, not sending them at all (this boo-boo is extremely common for smaller parties such as Baby/Bridal Showers, Birthday Bashes, etc)
- including gift registry information on wedding invitations
- requesting monetary gifts
- not ordering enough food but having enormous centerpieces/decor
- not thanking your guests for coming

...oh how I could go on forever...

"I WILL REMEMBER THAT MY EVENT IS MINE AND NO ELSE'S"

It's very easy to get pulled into a thousand different directions with your plans due to outside influences. And with once-in-a-lifetime events many planners forget what they envisioned for their party and succumb to everyone else's ideas and desires. This can be a result of the fear of creating unnecessary drama and conflict among family members, the threat of financial aid being cut off or the dread of hurting feelings.

Avoid the situation by being clear and upfront with your intentions for your event with family members and friends and let them know that your plans are very important to you. To deflect hurt feelings express your appreciation for whatever suggestion is being offered but politely decline (politeness is key!) and explain why. In some cases where financial input is a factor, issue a compromise that will benefit everyone (especially you!)

"I WILL ENJOY THE PLANNING PROCESS!"

That feeling that you're drowning in a sea of expectations, budgets, time lines, To Do Lists and pressure to have a party that outdoes all other parties your guests have attended? Yup, we've all been there. It's funny though how unnecessary these stresses really are.

How can you enjoy the planning process? First, be organized. Have a To-Do List coordinated for each month of planning and check items off as you go along. Enlist family and friends to help with items that you know you won't have time for/will require help for. Have a check-list of items that must be ordered or purchased. Set a detailed budget and keep track of deposits and balances. Create a binder to house all details of your event including magazine articles or ads, pictures and swatches.

Heck, hire an EVENT PLANNER to keep you organized if that's what will help you enjoy the process of planning.

Most importantly though, throughout the planning process of your event, be sure to remember what the event is for in the first place! Are you marrying the love of your life? Are you celebrating a milestone birthday? Is your son or daughter 'officially' becoming a man or woman? No one sets out to throw a party for the sole purpose of having a party. What doesn't absolutely scream Winter Wedding other than a Nutcracker Suite themed wedding? This Planner got so excited over this theme that she had to do not one, but two inspiration boards!
