ARE YOU PART OF THE ELITE?

A brand spankin' new bridal forum has just hit the Canadian wedding industry and once it offically gets rolling it promises to be the creme-de-la creme of bridal forums!

The new forum -- appropriately named Elite_Weddings -- describes itself as " a forum for discerning brides and grooms, who want their wedding day to be perfect." In other words, its a forum for wedding couples who want to hear from members and wedding professionals who have the same high standards that they do.

At first glance, the forum may appear like any other forum out there -- offering an assembly of categories ranging from Do-It-Yourself projects and Vendor promotions to Destination Weddings, Wedding Rants and more. But what makes this forum different is the products and services featured on the board are not just any "vendor" who has paid a fee to participate on the boards and advertise their company.

According to Elite Weddings, the industry professionals featured on this forum "must meet specific eligability requirements which show them to be reputable and reliable in the business".

This forum is not about how to create a wedding out of a shoestring budget or which vendors are the most-budget friendly. This forum is about wanting the very best for your wedding day and the conversations and professionals featured on the board reflect that.

In an industry where a new wedding company or service pops up every day, Elite Weddings is as polished and poised as the name hints. But it can only be as hot as the Brides and Grooms who post! So get on out there, join the board and start chatting!http://eliteweddings.19.forumer.com/

HALLOWEEN
GOES GLAM
(Yes it IS possible to make Halloween boo-tiful)

© Melissa Nowakowski 2008

When one thinks of a Halloween party, certain images come to mind...house parties decorated with an overabundance of "fake cobwebs", orange and black streamers and the "Monster Mash" blaring in the background while gorillas and witches roam about with beer or wine in hand...or the nightclub party with pounding base, scattered flashes of light and at least six (if not more) "sexy nurses", Catwoman or "sexy witches" prowling the scene.

It's hard to picture Halloween as glamorous.

But it is possible to have a 'boo-tiful' (pardon the pun) Halloween party whether it's a creative well-to-do for clients and co-workers or a unique gathering at your home. Going glam merely requires one simple thing: toss out the notion that Halloween has to be everything orange and black, paper or plastic, ghouls and goblins or edibley simple (not to mention the notion that your costume has to be made of polyester or rubber).

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:
The venue for your spook-fest need not be boring. Choosing the right setting for your party will set the tone for the evening.

Research haunted venues in your city – whether they are an actual heritage venue, a vintage restaurant, an old hotel or movie house – and the rental fees for the evening. Depending on the size of your event you may find that renting a space is the best fit. Even booking a private room at a historically-haunted restaurant works perfectly and is at little to no cost to you. Untraditional venues such as the upper floor of a movie house, etc. may prove to be cost efficient as they are rarely booked let alone during Halloween weekend.

Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the venue must look scary or haunted. Just its history alone will be enough to send shivers down your guests’ spines. The venue’s history can be printed as an insert with your formal invitation or you can have small placards with the venue’s haunted history placed sporadically throughout the venue.

Even your home can generate the creepy-crawlies. Live in a new sub-development? Make up your own spooky history of the grounds on which your house was built (remember Poltergeist the movie?) Use special effects and décor to cast your home in an eerie light.

Some of our fave haunted venues here in the GTA? The Distillery, the Keg Mansion, Heintzman House and the Doctor’s House in Kleinberg.

THE INVITES:
Do away with Evites and cheesy jack-o-lantern invitations and choose invitations housed in black envelopes and made with luscious fabrics like velvet or metallic materials. As mentioned above, include an insert with the haunted history of your party venue, a riddle/hint of what to expect or you may even choose to include a token of your bash whether it be a plastic “skeleton key” or a black feather plume.

THE ATTIRE:
Traditional house party screams gorillas and sexy nurses. Glamorous spook-fest calls for drama. That said, request in your invitations that guests don all black attire and a Venetian mask. Remind them that the creepier the mask the better (you can even hold a contest for the scariest mask). Want to challenge your guests? Instruct guests to make their own Venetian masks.

THE DÉCOR:

Have fun with this! Store away those paper streamers and get creative! Here are some cool ideas that Et Lofte Events have drummed up which you can implement whether your function is a formal bash at a venue or in the comfort of your own home:

Light up the place! Use uplights in dark colours like deep reds to light up the outside walls of your venue or home. Use uplights inside the venue as well by lighting specific walls (not all of them) for flair.

Get foggy! Use a fog machine (aka: dry ice) to spontaneously spit out fog to accompany the special lighting.

Scream it. Have a looping slideshow or video of horror-movie clips projected onto select walls of your venue. Use clips from every horror movie from the classics to modern day – the mix of black and white with colour will keep your surroundings entertaining and eye-catching. Be sure to have the videos/slideshows on silent for drama.

Drape this. Drape tables in deep red satin underlays and cover with luxurious black embroidered overlays. Line windows big and small with dramatic red and black luscious fabrics.

Get back Jack! Forget done-and-done-again orange Jack-0-lanterns. Get funky with your pumpkins and using different sized pumpkins from small to the largest you can find, carve them into intricate designs and spray paint the pumpkin silver or white for a sleek metallic look. Add a black long-lasting candle and you have yourself a new twist on a cool staple of Halloween. Use these lanterns to line windowsills, front steps, and stairwells and group a few together to add a dramatic effect to the corners of rooms.

Paint broomsticks a variety of colours or group together like-coloured broomsticks in a floor urn. Place the broomsticks in the urn handle first and fan out the broomsticks as you would the stems of a floral arrangement. Fill in gaps with straw or thin coloured branches.

Urn some décor-flattery! Have beautiful, antique looking urns resting on their sides with deep red and black or purple and black sand spilling out of it into a pool on the surface.

Need bewitching centerpieces? Fill a short simple vase with some water. Cover the vase with a tall witches hat. Cut off the tip of the witch’s hat (at the very point) and insert an arrangement of spiky, dark-coloured florals through the tip of the hat into the vase so that the florals stick out the very point of the witch hat.

Paint foam heads black and cover the faces with Venetian masks. Place the heads sporadically about the venue.

MUSIC:
Going glam for Halloween doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stomp out classics like ‘Monster Mash’. In fact, you’d be surprised by how many people actually cheer when that song comes on. But choose your music wisely. Weather you have a DJ or are playing DJ yourself, be sure to mix in your favourite non-Halloween music with the classic spook-songs. And be sure to steer clear of the traditional “howls and creepy noise” Cds!

Hiring a live band to cover all the classic Halloween songs (and more of course) is a great treat for your guests as well.

CATERING:
Ask any good catering for cost efficient food fare with a spooky twist and you’ll be surprised with the delicious hors d’ouevres that they create (not to mention the adorable names to go along with them). From Bloody Shooters (tomato soup or gazpacho served in shot glasses) and ‘Mummy Wraps’ to Hallo weenies (tasty sausage rolled in puff pastries) and Death by Chocolate fondue, your party food doesn't need to consist of bowls of chips and cheesies.

Signature drink anyone? How about Bloody Marys or a Cauldron of red wine?

Halloween is meant to be a fun celebration despite its dark roots. But for those who want to mix in a little sophistication with their creepiness, going glam can be a delicious alternative and isn’t difficult to pull off. All it takes is a little imagination, some great food and music and an open mind!

BOO!

TRENDS FOR 2009 THAT WE LOOOOOOVE

© Melissa Nowakowski 2008

COLOURS
We’ve been waiting for this! At long last, 2009 will be all about bright splashes of colour and bold colour combos. No, this doesn’t mean that events have to look garish! It means that gone are the days of soft, pastel shades and here come luxurious and luminous palettes!

Here are just a few of our up and coming faves:

Blue with orange
Peach with orange
Wine/Burgandy with burnt orange and tan
Yellow (all shades!)
Yellow with blue
Turquoise
Turquoise with red
Pink with blue
Bright pinks like fuschia

DECOR AND MORE

There are two huge inspirations that are weighing big in 2009: the environment and the art of illumination.

Using coloured spotlights, uplighting and unique lighting fixtures in your event creates a bold, dramatic statement.

And of course, the eco-friendly campaign will continue at an even stronger pace, affecting everything in events from décor to takeaways to healthy, organic catering.

Some of the up and coming trends we’re excited about:

Favours that inspire others to go green: using lightbulbs as bud vases, giving away personalized/beautifully decorated canvas grocery bags, gas cards in decorative slipcovers, seedlings and more! All are unique, beautiful and practical giveaways for the environmentally-concious guest.

Centerpieces and décor inspired by nature: potted trees or exotic plants, moss sculptures, aquatic centerpieces and more all combine the best of nature to remind us of its beauty.

Outdoor Chandeleirs! Forget traditional lanterns! What could be more dramatic at an outdoor or a tented event than hanging chandeliers over tabletops, draped from the branches of trees, or lining the sides of a walkway?

Chinese Flying Lanterns! Flame retardant and fully biodegradeable coloured lanterns are lit and then guided into the air to ascend like miniature hot air balloons. A unique and beautiful alternative to fireworks, Chinese flying lanterns not only add colour to the night sky but exude unsurpassed elegance (not to mention pay tribute to an ancient Chinese tradition!)

WHAT’S HOT IN WEDDINGS? FASHION!

In 2009, inspiration is returning to the classic eras. From the dropped waist of the roaring 20’s, the mini dress of the 60’s and the sophisticated style of Audrey Hempburn in the 50’s, to the daring gowns of today like those whose hems rest above the knee but gradually become extra long in the back – the wedding gown is undergoing some dramatic transformations. Not to mention their accessories. Black accessories are making a grand entrance and hats –whether it’s the pillbox, the cocktail or the garden hat – are making a strong comeback.

In terms of fabrics, softer and more angelic fabrics are entering the scene in the form of chiffon and draping. And with regards to design, colour is everything – appearing in trims, beading and even in fabrics and when combined with the up and coming trend of patterns on wedding gowns – make an even bigger statement.

OTHER NIFTY LIL' UP AND COMING TRENDS?

Auctions: Believe it or not, auctions are becoming increasingly popular at events of all kinds whether it be at a Stag and Do to raise money or a corporate event to showcase new and exciting products. And then of course there's the traditional use...charity fundraisers...

Personal Chefs: This may not seem like a new trend but hiring chefs to cater to parties that are smaller in scale is on the rise. Personal chefs from top catering firms are showing up at parties of all kinds including showers, birthdays, anniversaries and your friendly nieghbourhood dinner gathering.

2nd Weddings go Glitz! Gone are the modest 2nd marriages conducted in front of a justice of the peace and a simple gathering at the couple's home afterwords. Couples getting married for a second time are now throwing marriage celebrations as grand as the first complete with catering, decor, special effects and high fashion. And why not? A wedding is still a wedding!

Food frenzy: The word is that some of the new (and unique) trends creeping up in catering include bacon as the new additive of choice and the exclusive use of locally grown foods for grand events. In the dessert department, Paleta (a Mexican ice pop that comes in unique flavours) is making a statement as a convenient soiree choice, gourmet chocolate with everything continues to be a trend favourite and last but not least, while cupcakes have always been a fun dessert choice, it's going to be big at play at events of all kinds.

UNVEILING
THE BRIDE

© Melissa Nowakowski 2008

The white bridal veil has been a long standing tradition for brides. In fact, most brides assume it’s a requirement in wedding attire – a piece that’s as necessary as the shoes. Whether it’s a veil with a blusher, a lengthy cathedral veil or a bundle of tulle attached by a hair clip, the bridal veil is often considered a “must-have” in conjunction with the bridal gown.

So how did we wind up with this scrap of see-through netting attached to our heads when we walk down that aisle? In ancient societies where marriages were arranged by the parents of the bride and groom the veil acted as a barrier between the future hubby and wife. The groom was not permitted to see his bride until they were married and so the veil covered her face until they were officially wed and the groom removed the veil.

In ancient Rome, the veil was used to protect the bride from evil spirits. The bride wore the veil to disguise herself so that the evil spirits (who were jealous of the bride’s happiness) could not know who she was and cause trouble.

But just because history sets the tradition, brides really don’t need to stick with it. After all, in most cases it’s merely tradition, not a rule (depending on your religion of course). In fact, more and more brides are opting to unveil and choose accessories that are much more dramatic, stylish, or provide the ultimate comfort (you’d be surprised at the number of times I’ve had clients beg me to remove their veil after the First Dance!)

Here are just a few super-chic alternatives you can adopt should you choose to unveil for your wedding:

EVER SO FASCINATING FASCINATORS!

I remember the day that one of my brides walked up to me wearing a fascinator…I practically squealed with delight. Fascinators are my all-time fave bridal accessory but believe it or not they’re only beginning to catch on as a trend. Whether you choose a simple, classic design. an uber-dramatic piece, feathers or crystals, fascinators not only add that “oomph” to your look but are as easy to wear as tiaras.

HATS OFF TO BRIDAL HATS!

Oh how endless are the possibilities for bridal hats! From modern chic to classic elegance to historical flair, bridal hats provide the ultimate in comfort. Not only can they shield you from the elements but they can be easily removed at any time! Of course the style of your gown will determine the style of hat…and there are many styles. Here are just a few:

Picture hats are the beautiful wide-brimmed hats best worn for outdoor wedding. Adorned with ribbon, flowers or feathers these hats are sleek, use clean lines and add a classic elegance to your look.

Pill box hats were all the rage in the 1930s and today are considered a vintage gem. Worn alone or with a birdcage veil, to the side or at the back of your head, pill box hats can add a sophisticated chicness or a funky twist to your style.

Cocktail hats can be the most simple or the most edgy of hats. Because of their flat round shape, they can rest pretty much anywhere on your head and secured with bobby pins. Cocktail hats can decked out with everything from feathers to crystals to flowers and these decorations can sit low on the fabric, simply line it or jut out high above the head for the most dramatic of looks. Not considered as “vintage chic” as the pillbox or as “elegant” as the picture, the Cocktail hat tends to be a rarity. But with that rarity comes its unique and occasionally daring look.

DISMANTLING THE CROWN

Every bride knows that the tiara can be the perfect accompaniment to a veil or an extremely fashionable stand-alone. From the simplest of crystallized bands to the highest crowns, tiaras are another trendy accessory. But even the tiara can have a makeover.

Assymetrical Side Tiaras are the funky versions of classic tiaras. Worn like a headband (the band on the top of your head is often covered with your hair do), the more festooned portion of this tiara sits at the side of the head. I’ve seen everything from straightforward crystal designs to ornamented butterflies to fans of gems.

Hair vines are crystals, beads, shells, feathers…(anything really!)…set onto wires that weave throughout your hair. Vines can be worn across the head like a head band, at the back of the head for a peek-a-boo effect or throughout the entire hairstyle. Not quite a tiara, not really a headband, the hair vine is a unique twist to the veil alternative.

Wearing a single flower in the hair is most often seen with destination weddings or tropical themes. However, the flower-in-the-hair can be worn for any style of wedding. Wearing a bloom of a classic flower like the rose or orchid can add a romantic feel while a bright, more tropical flower can add a more sunny disposition. Wearing foliage rather than an actual flower can add drama and mystic.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL VEIL

If you hate the conventional look of a traditional veil but like the mysteriousness that it has the potential to bring, the Birdcage Veil is the veil for you! This veil sits over your entire head and reaches no longer than past your chin at its greatest length. Some brides wear it to the bridge of their nose, some to their chin, some at an angle, some straight forward, some with netting fabric, some with tulle, some wear it alone and some wear it attached to a fascinator, pillbox or cocktail hat.

TAKEAWAY ALERT:

SPREAD SOME SUNSHINE!

© Melissa Nowakowski 2008

Whether it's a wedding, a social event or a corporate party, finding the perfect takeaway (otherwise known as the 'favour', the 'giveaway', etc) can be a daunting task. Nic Naks are often avoided -- why give your guests something that they can't use? Jordan almonds, the boxed truffle, personalized cookies, the bamboo plant...all have been done time and time again and have lost their "oh wow, how neat" factor.

We've found an edible takeaway that's bright, fun, oh so tasty...and not your average takeaway...chocolate covered sunflower seeds!

That's right, sunflower seeds dipped in chocolate and available in super cute colours. Who would have thunk?

Chocolate covered sunflower seeds are the hottest thing to hit the chocolatier market and you can find them in a variety of places.

The Cocoa Room has the best colour options. You can choose one solid colour or boxed seeds in a mixture of colours whether it is orange, pink and red to lime green, yellow and orange. Prices start at $6.50 U.S for a 4 oz. box and end at $17.32 U.S for 12 oz.

Adam & Eve Chocolatiers in Toronto (97 Maitland St.) carries Cocoa Room products already boxed and in different colour combinations. Although a bit pricier than their U.S supplier (prices start at $8 for a 4 oz box), discounts can be worked out depending on the amount. This planner managed to score 100 4 oz boxes at $6 each.

Laura Secord carries chocolate covered sunflower seeds as well in long, skinny containers but only in a rainbow mix. They sell for $6 per box.

And if you're not picky about select colours (in other words you love the rainbow mix), select locations of Bulk Barn carry them at a heavenly price.

Chocolate covered sunflower seeds are not only a sweet alternative to the traditional edible takeaways but these cute and quirky favours might just add a bit of sunshine to your evening!

IT'S A GUY THING
Part IV of IV

THEME: Sporting It

While watching a football game on television surrounded by chips, pretzels and beer certainly comes to mind, this theme is anything but. 'Sporting It' is a full day affair of sports and grub. Fun, interactive and yet oh so stylish, this theme will wow any sports enthusiast who is expecting the generic sports-pub crawl.

The Day is split into two parts: Round up the guests for an action-packed early afternoon game of your guy's favourite sport -- whether it be street hockey, football, soccer, basketball, etc. then have the guests re-group later in the evening for a formal dinner party at a classy sports bar (yes they DO exist!)

THE VENUE(S) Be sure to mention both venues on your invitations and include maps if necessary.

For your sport-du-jour, book a community field or parking lot that is central to most of your guests. Some fields and lots may have no costs involved but be prepared to have to pay a small fee to use most. Be sure to book the field or lot well in advance to avoid conflicts with community leagues.

For your post-game nibbles, avoid the cliche sports pub if you can and choose a sports bar and restaurant that has class appeal. Our favourite tres-chic pre/post game venue inToronto? BOTTOM LINE RESTAURANT & BAR. This bar boasts elegant dark wood and suave surroundings mixed with classic-yet-oh-so-sophisticated television screens, acting as the perfect spot for a formal dinner party of sports enthusiasts. A close second is THE BIER MARKET on the Esplanade.

Of course, having the dinner party in the comfort of your own dining room is always a great, cost-efficient option too!

THE ENTERTAINMENT:

Part 1 - The Game: Having a large group of friends participate in any physical sport is not only the perfect form of entertainment, but is a great way to get guests interacting with one another, even if a few of the guests have never before played the sport. In fact, some of the most humorous moments often come about courtesy of those who have never before played that specific sport. And don't worry about guests getting down and dirty -- in spacing out the two events your guests will have plenty of time to clean up prior to the dinner portion.

Part 2 - The Dinner: Having the racket of a sports game on the walls behind you is a natural fit, but carefully choosing music such as classic theme songs belonging to sports teams, shows and movies adds a whole new twist. Think Stronger (Raptors theme song), the Rocky theme song and Hit 'Em High from Space Jam.

If your guests still have energy left over from the earlier that day, additional entertainment can be included by way of portable sports games. Rent a basketball hoop set and place in the furthest corner of the room (if space permits of course) or a golf putting strip. Challenge guests to games of 21 or a "hole in one" championship. Sporty prizes such as caps, t-shirts, magazines, etc. can be given out to the winners.

THE STYLE: Who says sporty can't be chic? In choosing the right venue and decor you can have the sporty look and the class too.

Have all the guests seated at rectangular tables fitted together in a U-shape rather than at small or round tables. They will feel more connected.

Want to add some cache to your tables? Have colourful table runners across the length of the tables and place bowls filled with specific types of balls along their length. For example, one bowl can be filled with tennis balls, another bowl with golf balls and other with baseballs, etc.

A more hands-on centerpiece is a straight ledge of balls. Place long, dark wood ledges running across the length of the tables. Have nails sticking out of the top of the wood and rest large sports balls in between them, using the nails to hold the balls in place. Alternate the type of ball -- soccer, volleyballs and basketballs work best. Cover the nails with pockets of fake grass.

THE FOOD: Nothing says sports like meat. But that doesn't mean your meat has to be boring. Spice up the traditional with some exciting additions such as Hamburger dips, spicy chili popcorn and spicy stuffed potatoes.

THE GIVEAWAYS: Send your guests off with... what else? Sports paraphernalia! Key chains, stress balls or mini toss able sports balls are items that everyone could use and with which they can have loads of fun long after the party.

IT'S A GUY THING
Part III of IV

THEME: Back to Basics

For the "Mr. Fix-it" or the guy who just loves to work with his hands, this party theme is easy to do, creative and a whole lot of fun.

THE VENUE: Choose a venue that incorporates wood or metal beams and fixtures. Our favourite Toronto venues that suit this style are The Brant House (with its wooden beams) and the The Gladstone (with its exposed brick), but you can just as easily do this theme in your backyard or party room as well.

THE STYLE: Choose natural colours and elements for this theme whether it's relying on the nature in your backyard for colour inspiration (greens and browns) or combining black, red and grey for maximum impact.

Getting back to the basics is all about using everyday materials to create fun and interesting accents for the party. Instead of ordinary table linens, use layered pieces of wood as a table topper or graphing paper in place of linen. Use old hub caps as charger plates, metal bolts or triangular rulers as napkin rings. Use decorative molding, tin cans (with holes poked through the tin) and old lighting fixtures to act as containers for pillar candles, votives or tapers. Or fill large tin cans with moss and willow branches or leafy branches from a tree (remember keep it natural!).

THE ENTERTAINMENT: Any background music will work with this theme whether it's by a DJ, stereo or otherwise.

If you truly want to incorporate games into the mix, try a "Mr. Fix It Relay". Devide your guests into teams of three. Have three tables set up: one with paper mache materials and loose balloons, one with plastercine or clay and one with a vast number of materials (cardboard, construction paper, glue, nuts and bolts, scissors, pieces of wood and pipe, etc). The first person on the team runs to the paper mache table and has to blow up a balloon and then cover it with paper mache. When finished they tap the next teammate who runs to the plastercine table. That member has to create an object of your choice out of the clay, then run back to the front and tap the next teammate. That teammate then has to run to the third table and build a trophy or "cool looking structure" using ALL of the materials on the table as a gift to the guest of honour, then run back to the start of the line. Of course, the team will be timed. The team with the best time wins.

Prizes can be anything from tools to Mike Holmes books. It's a fun game but be sure to stock up each of the tables in between teams to be fair.

THE FOOD: Stick to the basics when selecting meal, appetizer and beverages -- chicken, steak, ribs, grilled vegetable paninis and overall grilled veggies like sautéed mushrooms and potatoes can be creatively prepared and served. Why not serve a Panini with a beer in a metal lunchbox to the guests or brown bag them with the guests name scrawled across? Or balanace wooden beams across cement blocks to act as platter tables. If hosting this party in your backyard, there's nothing that pleases men more than a BBQ and nothing more simple. Keep drinks fun and easy such as coolers, beer, wine, etc.

THE GIVEAWAYS: Personalized tape measures or mini screwdriver kits go a long way in pleasing Mr. Fix-Its. For added flair, use work gloves to store the giveaways instead of gift bags.
